Modifying for Modesty

I'm sure you've got one of these somewhere in your closet... lurking in the back. I know I did. For almost a year an old ex-favorite denim skirt hid away, waiting for its time to shine. Somehow, someway this skirt became too short. It used to be below the bottoms of my knees... and worked its way up above my knees. Now I know I haven't grown any taller in at least 5 years or so, so I must surmise that this was due to improper washing procedures :) The skirt was then exiled until further measures could be taken.

My original idea was to sew a ruffle on the bottom, but the style of the skirt made that seem like a strange afterthought. A straight piece across the bottom would be better, I thought... but upon asking the advice of my sweet momma, we agreed that it would be worth the teeny amount of extra work to inset the fabric addition above four inches into the skirt.

I found the perfect piece of fabric in my "newer" stash. A lovely Mary Engelbreit fabric meant to accent another project... that didn't end up matching. Alas, the Perils of Online Fabric Shopping! (Place hand against forehead and sigh dramatically)

With no further ado, here is the finished product! A new favorite to be sure, and now perfectly tea length.

What a fabulous idea! And now you've put your own stamp on the skirt -- making it unique and wearable at the same time. Brilliant! :)

What a perfectly fantastic idea! It looks wonderful with the fabric inset and I agree, much better than a ruffle or even a band at the bottom would look. What a stylish, yet modest skirt!

What a great idea! I have no idea how to sew anything. I had to fix my husbands tie and it looked aweful, thank goodness you can't see the stiching.

Do you use a sewing machine? I've been thinking of buying one and teaching myself how to use it.

Can you recommend anything??

Tilly, I found it on Ebay :) Just search for Mary Engelbreit Friends and Flowers... every one of the fabrics is SO, SO, SO cute! But I had to limit myself to two yards since it's so pricey... so I'll be using it quite sparingly!

Rita, I have a Bernette 80e. I love it 90% of the time :) But I think that's the case with most all sewing machines!

And Lauren... Anyone can sew! Start with the basics- Begin with a pillowcase (that was my first "real" project) and work your way up to a simple A-line skirt. Before you know it, you'll be zipping along!

Thank you ladies so much for the sweet compliments- they made my day!! :)

What a lovely skirt - the fabric accents beautifully. I would love to learn to sew one day as well. In fact, I am wearing my long denim skirt with a red polo for work right now. I love the feel of wearing the long denim skirts.

That is so cute. I think it was definitely worth the extra time and effort to insert it.
