"Old Fashioned" Cleaning

Since we are having visitors tonight (Yay!) I spent the afternoon doing some good old fashioned scrubbing. I spilled milk last night all over the floor, and learned yet again, never ever swiffer something sticky. It only spreads it out...
Unhappy with walking around barefoot in a kitchen that felt like double stick tape, and yet not owning a good old mop, I decided to clean like Cinderella does. I got a kitchen towel sopping wet, and scrubbed the floor. I dried it with another towel, and repeated. I got a sparkly clean floor- with really not too much elbow grease at all.
Inspired by this, I took to the carpet with baking soda... and the same towel, rinsed out of course :) I got out some old spots, and some newer spots too! I then swept the bathroom instead of vacumming, and well, it was a great workout- and gave me a real sense of accomplishment, and was chemical free. It was all strangely fun... :-D

haha,I bet you're loving your house right now! I just love scrubbing the floor on hands an knees too...but I do like this trick my grandmother taught me... take that very same swiffer and instead of one of those swiffer pads, use a wet (soapy if you like) kitchen towel on it...use like any other mop...it works wonderfully! If you do use a soapy one, than do rinse with a clean one after...drying is optional....I personally just let it air dry. It's does a fantastic job, and saves your knees and back just a bit. :) Oh, and I'm off to read your letter!

Sometimes cleaning the old fashioned way is so much more enjoyable than using modern methods - even thought it may take a little longer. Maybe because you have time to reflect and relax!!
Well, your post is inspiring - and I'm sure my Mom would love it if I decided to voluntarily sweep and mop!!

I've found that the only way to get my floors truly clean is on my hands and knees. Not even an old-fashioned mop works for me. And I know what you mean about 'strangely fun'. A friend gave me her extra stock pot last week, and it had pasta residue in it. I kind of wondered at myself when I realize I was *excited* to take baking soda to it and scrub it into sparklingness. ;)

Your post has given me hope for my carpet. :) 10+ years of normal wear and tear has left the white carpet quite dingy. I love b. soda - it's the only thing that will get grease off my pots/pans and splatters on the wall above the stove. LOL Old-fashioned scrubbing is wonderful fun, I agree! . . .wasn't it Anne in Anne of Windy Poplars who was told she should be in a museum because she said she loved making dirty things clean again?

Oh I love cleaning my floors like that. Praise the Lord we have a moderately small house. : )

There is an old movie calld The Ghost and Mrs. Muir and there is a scene in where they are scrubbing the floors and I just love it!!!
